What to Look For in Private Cloud Storage

Zero-Knowledge Architecture

The provider should have no technical ability to read your files. Your encryption keys should never leave your device. Even if the provider is hacked or served a legal order, your files remain private.

Client-Side Encryption

Encryption must happen on your device before upload — not on the server after. "Encrypted at rest" often means the provider holds the keys and can still access your data.

Jurisdiction

Switzerland and Iceland have strong privacy protections and are outside Five/Nine/Fourteen Eyes. US and UK providers face more aggressive legal demands for user data.

Open Source Clients

Open-source client apps can be audited to verify encryption is implemented correctly. Closed-source clients require trusting the provider's claims.

Red Flags to Avoid

Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive Are Not Private

None of these provide zero-knowledge encryption. The providers can and do access your files — for scanning, advertising, compliance, and legal requests. They are convenient but not private.

"Encrypted" Is Not the Same as Zero-Knowledge

"Encrypted at rest" means the provider stores encrypted copies but holds the keys. They can decrypt anytime. Zero-knowledge means they hold no keys and genuinely cannot read your data.

Cloud Storage Is Not a Backup
